It's traumatic and sad for everyone. Age or health makes driving a car unsafe. When should you put away the keys? How do you tell?

If you have a loved one with memory problems, Alzheimers, or dementia you will almost certainly face the day of decision. Must your loved one stop driving an automobile?

Some things to remember when the time comes:

  1. Be gentle -- control and power will never win the day
  2. Perhaps confirm your decision with your family doctor
  3. Get someone else to break the news. Doctor, priest, counselor.
  4. Make the car keys disappear. Out of sight, out of mind.
  5. If possible, sell the car.

It isn't an easy call. It can be unbearably tough to bear the responsibility. But here are some sites where you can find expert tips to help you through that decision.
