Love this comment once made by Sir Winston Churchill:
I am ready to meet my maker, but whether my maker is prepared for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter.
Looks like the U.S. needs to work a little harder at making plans for the millions of Baby Boomers who will not be able to retire when they reach their early to mid 60's. From reports in the media, you can assume Canada and Japan are a bit better prepared. But it's true that an awful lot of us will not be financially prepared to switch to leisure time in the next ten years.
I found these resources:
Among working Americans, 50% have no retirement plans and have no 401K . To retire in any degree of comfort, a couple needs $350,000 plus Social Security (good luck counting on THAT) according to newest numbers. Gone are the days when family money passed form hand-to-hand and bailed people out in retirement. Less than 20% of us will inheret anything major. The lottery is a pretty iffy retirement plan. With the gryaing of America, we need to require our representative on The Hill to think more about Boomers and maybe a bit less about bombs.
For yourself, consider entrepreneurial opportunities, consulting for the company you're supposed to retire from, training for a new career.
